KidDesktop Corporate Backgrounder

KidDesktop, a business initiative of Purple Apples, LLC, is a kid-friendly Windows desktop alternative providing children, ages 3-7, a safe PC learning experience without access to a parent’s files and programs or harmful Internet content.

Founded in January 2007 by Dan and Brittanie Werbel, KidDesktop was created to allow children to browse the Internet in a safe educational environment that is parent controlled. The inspiration for KidDesktop began when Dan and Brittanie noticed their oldest child - then four - easily minimizing the screen while playing an educational game and opening Dan and Brittanie’s files and programs. While watching their son become more computer-proficient on a daily basis, Dan and Brittanie began searching for a comprehensive platform solution to make their children’s computer experience simple and easy to use - without accidentally deleting their own files and applications. After realizing there was a void in the market, the Werbels decided to build an easy-to-use, kid-friendly desktop application appropriate for preschoolers.

Ongoing research and development of the product through customer feedback ensures KidDesktop is the most engaging, simplest, and safest child desktop product on the market. KidDesktop features include a customized start screen and activity bar with a child’s own personalized activities, games and Web sites; the option to download and view his or her own pictures; explore approved YouTube videos and the capability to navigate the Internet in a safe working environment. Parents can also limit kids’ computer time with the timer/clock function.

A privately-held company, KidDesktop is headquartered outside of Washington, D.C., in Falls Church, Va.
